Make a Strong First Impression

Custom Freestanding Signs Built for Visibility

A freestanding sign is often the first thing customers, visitors, residents, or guests see when approaching a property. Positioned near the road or at an entrance, it identifies the location while creating an important first impression.

Asheville Signworks designs, produces, and installs custom freestanding signs for businesses, churches, medical practices, residential communities, commercial developments, contractors, and organizations throughout Asheville and Western North Carolina.

From simple post-and-panel signs to dimensional entrance signs, tenant directories, community signage, and larger custom structures, every project is designed around the property, visibility requirements, branding, and intended use.

Freestanding entrance sign for First Baptist Church of Black Mountain

Church Signage

First Baptist Church of Black Mountain

First Baptist Church of Black Mountain needed a new main entrance sign while retaining the existing brick structure that remained from an earlier sign installation.

We were able to work with the existing mounting points and build a new support system within the brick structure rather than unnecessarily replacing what could still be used. The finished sign combines strong identification, the church logo, its Black Mountain location, and a QR code in a clean, highly visible presentation.

Family Care of Fairview needed a highly visible roadside sign that could be easily recognized by patients approaching the medical practice from a busy roadway.

The shaped white sign face uses the practice's bright turquoise and navy branding for excellent contrast and readability. The large logo, business name, street number, and “You Matter Here” message make effective use of the available space without overcrowding the sign.

UPM Raflatac freestanding sign in a white architectural vinyl sign frame installed in Mills River, NC

Architectural Vinyl Sign Frame

UPM Raflatac — Mills River, NC

This freestanding sign for UPM Raflatac in Mills River uses a prefabricated architectural vinyl sign frame, providing the substantial appearance of a traditional post-and-panel sign with a clean, low-maintenance exterior finish.

The frame was manufactured to the specifications of the project and features substantial square posts, decorative caps and trim, and a framed sign area that gives the finished installation a polished, permanent appearance. Asheville Signworks produced the sign graphics, assembled the completed sign, and installed it on site.

Vinyl sign frames are a great option when a customer wants an architectural freestanding sign without the maintenance associated with a painted wood structure. The white frame also provides a crisp backdrop for UPM Raflatac's green griffin logo and simple black lettering.

Lazy Otter River Access freestanding sign installed in Horse Shoe, NC for MountainTrue

Public River Access Sign

Lazy Otter River Access — Horse Shoe, NC

Henderson County regained a recreational river access point when the former Lazy Otter Outfitters property reopened to the public in June 2026. The property is now operated by regional conservation nonprofit MountainTrue as the Lazy Otter River Access, providing free public access to the river.

Asheville Signworks produced and installed this freestanding entrance sign using 3mm aluminum composite with digitally printed vinyl with UV- protective matte laminate. The sign face has rounded corners and is mounted in front of a pair of unpainted pressure-treated wood posts, giving the installation a simple, natural appearance appropriate for a public river access site.

And yes, we tested the river after the installation. It was entirely too cold to swim, but we did try.

Blue Ridge Longevity replacement sign insert installed in an existing monument sign

Monument Sign Insert

Blue Ridge Longevity

Blue Ridge Longevity needed a new sign insert installed in an existing monument sign. Normally, replacing a panel like this is fairly straightforward: remove one of the angle-aluminum retainers, slide the old sign out, install the new panel, and put the retainer back in place.

This particular sign had other plans. The old panel had been in the frame for so long that accumulated dirt had essentially glued it in place. Removing the side retainer wasn't enough, so we also had to remove the entire top retainer. That meant scooching across the top of the monument to reach and remove all of the screws — rather like sitting on a tree trunk and inching toward the end of a branch to retrieve a stuck kite, except the tree branch is black-painted metal sitting in full sun and feels approximately 200 degrees.

The installation took considerably more work than we had planned, but the job was completed properly and the customer wasn't charged anything extra. Asheville Signworks provides quotes, not estimates. Unless the scope of a project changes, we believe the price we quote should be the price the customer pays. Surprise charges at the end of a job don't make happy customers, and they don't make good business.

On a personal note, Pete at Blue Ridge Longevity is a real stand-up guy, and it was a pleasure working with him. While we were there, he took the time to explain GLP-1 medications and how they are used in weight-loss treatment. His enthusiasm for what he does is obvious, and he is incredibly knowledgeable about his field. That combination of expertise and genuine passion makes it easy to believe Blue Ridge Longevity is going to do very well.

Replacement pan face for Octopus Garden Smoke Shop pylon sign after Hurricane Helene damage

Replacement Pylon Sign Faces

Octopus Garden Smoke Shop

Hurricane Helene blew out and broke one of the existing pan faces on this Octopus Garden Smoke Shop pylon sign. Rather than simply reproducing the damaged face, the customer decided it was a good opportunity to update the design.

With the new design approved, we replaced both pan faces so the two sides of the existing sign would match. The result gave the pylon sign a fresh, updated appearance while allowing the original sign structure to remain in service.

Restored sandblasted wood sign for White Oak Veterinary Hospital in Fletcher North Carolina
Severely weathered and split sandblasted wood lettering before restoration Before Restoration

Sandblasted Wood Sign Restoration

White Oak Veterinary Hospital

Sometimes a sign doesn't need to be replaced. It just needs someone willing to take on the challenge of bringing it back.

This existing sandblasted wood sign for White Oak Veterinary Hospital in Fletcher had suffered from years of exposure and neglect. Lichens covered the surface, the wood had split extensively — particularly on the south-facing side — and portions of the raised lettering had actually broken away as the wood deteriorated.

We removed the sign and brought it back to our shop, where restoration began with a thorough cleaning using a bleach-and-water solution. Stubborn lichen growth was carefully removed by hand before the sign was rinsed and allowed to dry.

From there, the real repair work began. Damaged areas of the lettering were rebuilt with epoxy in multiple applications, with each repair allowed to cure and then sanded before the next was made. Cracks throughout the background were filled with exterior latex caulk. Three coats of primer followed, with additional imperfections repaired as each coat revealed areas that still needed attention.

The original dog-and-cat artwork presented another challenge. It had been produced as printed vinyl, which had cracked, collected dirt and begun peeling away from the wood. After carefully removing the old vinyl, we found an image of the veterinary hospital's original logo and recreated the artwork with stencils and paint instead.

Six colors were matched by hand. With black and white added, this restored sign contains eight paint colors. For an outdoor wood sign, we believe the painted graphic is a much better long-term solution than replacing the deteriorated printed vinyl.

The transformation was dramatic. What arrived at our shop weathered, cracked and partially deteriorated left looking like a new sign again. Its brilliant colors now make White Oak Veterinary Hospital hard to miss while driving north on Hendersonville Road.

Common Questions

Freestanding Sign FAQs

How much does a freestanding sign cost?

Cost depends on the size, materials, number of sign faces, support structure, dimensional elements, site conditions, fabrication, and installation requirements. Asheville Signworks prepares custom quotes for each project.

Can you replace the face on an existing sign?

Yes. When an existing structure is still usable, a replacement sign face can often provide an entirely new appearance without replacing the complete sign system.

Can you make a double-sided freestanding sign?

Yes. Freestanding signs can be designed with one or two visible faces depending on the location, traffic direction, support structure, and viewing requirements.

Can you help design the sign?

Yes. Asheville Signworks can work with existing branding or create a custom sign layout based on the property, organization, intended message, and desired appearance.

Do you install freestanding signs?

Yes. Professional installation is available, including new sign structures, posts, replacement faces, and installations involving existing supports when those supports are suitable for reuse.

Do freestanding signs require a permit?

Permit requirements depend on the property's jurisdiction, sign size, height, location, construction, and other factors. Local regulations should be reviewed before fabrication or installation when a permit is required.
