Custom metal, wood, HDU, dimensional, carved, and CNC-cut signs designed and produced throughout Asheville and Western North Carolina.

Signs with Character

Custom Metal & Wood Signs Built for the Project

Some signs call for something more substantial than a printed panel. Wood, steel, aluminum, and HDU can add depth, texture, craftsmanship, and personality that simply cannot be duplicated with a flat graphic.

Asheville Signworks designs and produces custom metal and wood signs for businesses, communities, residences, municipalities, farms, organizations, and one-of-a-kind personal projects throughout Asheville and Western North Carolina.

Projects can include CNC plasma-cut steel, routed and carved wood, dimensional lettering, HDU sign foam, decorative metalwork, hand-finished surfaces, gold leaf, painted finishes, and intentionally weathered steel with beautiful natural-looking patinas.

Below are a few examples of metal and wood signs produced by Asheville Signworks.

Traditional gold leaf being applied by hand to a carved green sign at Asheville Signworks

Traditional Gold Leaf

Hand-Applied Gold Leaf

Genuine gold leaf creates a finish that printing and metallic paint simply cannot duplicate. Each delicate sheet is carefully placed over prepared lettering and gently worked into the surface by hand.

The result catches and reflects light in a way that gives carved and dimensional signs extraordinary richness. Gold leaf is especially effective on traditional signs where craftsmanship is part of the finished appearance.

Custom decorative steel garden arch with hummingbird and floral scrollwork in Asheville North Carolina

Decorative CNC-Cut Steel

Hummingbird Garden Arch

Metal signage does not necessarily have to contain a single word. This decorative garden arch was designed around a hummingbird, sweeping vines, leaves, and ornamental scrollwork.

CNC plasma cutting allows intricate artwork to be transformed into durable steel while carefully placed bridges keep the finished design connected as one continuous piece. Once installed above the fence, the arch becomes both metalwork, landscape art, and in this case, it also performed as a spacer for a pair of posts that kept falling in towards each other!

CNC Plasma-Cut Steel

Tail Carolina Farm — In Production

This photograph catches the Tails Carolina Farm sign while it is literally being created. The CNC plasma cutter follows the digital artwork while a high-temperature plasma arc cuts the design directly from sheet steel, up to 1/2" thick.

The sign was commissioned by a customer as a gift for a friend, making the custom artwork especially personal. The dog's portrait, mountain shapes, lettering, and circular border were all designed to remain connected in a single steel piece.

Oval CNC-cut steel address plaque number 3584 with decorative scrollwork and orange rust patina

Pickled Steel Address Sign

3584

This decorative address plaque was CNC plasma cut from steel, combining the house number with elaborate scrollwork in a single oval panel.

Instead of painting the steel, Asheville Signworks deliberately “pickled” it with a solution of hydrogen peroxide, white vinegar, and salt. The process rapidly develops a beautiful orange-brown patina, giving a brand-new steel sign the warmth and character of naturally weathered metal.

Custom Steel Address Sign

Hala — The Smiths

The lettering and figures were cut directly through the metal so the background shows through the design. The simple rectangular format keeps the piece clean while allowing the custom imagery to do the talking.

Custom oval steel wedding gift sign reading Have Courage and Be Kind with butterfly cutout

Custom Steel Wedding Gift

Have Courage and Be Kind

This custom steel sign was created as a wedding gift and displayed prominently during the wedding celebration. The phrase “Have Courage and Be Kind” was paired with a delicate butterfly illustration to create a personal piece that felt appropriate for both the occasion and the couple.

The lettering and butterfly were CNC plasma cut directly through the oval steel panel, allowing the background behind the sign to become part of the finished design. After the wedding, the piece continued on as a lasting decorative keepsake rather than disappearing with the rest of the event décor.

Oval steel Always and Forever and always sign with orange rust patina

Pickled Steel Decorative Sign

Always and Forever and Always.

The warm orange patina is the star of this simple oval steel sign. Flowing cut-out lettering keeps the design personal and understated, while the weathered surface gives it the character of a piece that has been outdoors for years.

Asheville Signworks created that finish intentionally by “pickling” the steel with hydrogen peroxide, white vinegar, and salt. The solution accelerates oxidation and creates the varied orange, brown, and darker tones that make every piece slightly different.

The sign was commissioned as a gift for a friend and incorporates the dog's portrait, mountain scenery, farm name, and circular border into one CNC plasma-cut steel design. To the brim custom rusted steel storefront sign above entrance in Asheville North Carolina

Pickled Steel Storefront Sign

to the brim

This simple horizontal storefront sign gains most of its personality from the material itself. The cut lettering exposes the wall behind the steel while the mottled orange and brown finish gives the panel a warm, aged appearance.

Rather than waiting years for nature to do the work, Asheville Signworks “pickled” the steel using hydrogen peroxide, white vinegar, and salt. The accelerated oxidation produces a beautiful organic patina that works especially well with Asheville's handmade, industrial, and rustic design aesthetic.

Village Caregiving dimensional HDU sign and RehabCarePLUS tenant signs in Asheville North Carolina

Dimensional HDU Sign

Village Caregiving

The Village Caregiving tenant sign was produced from HDU — high-density urethane, often called “sign foam.” HDU is an excellent sign material because it can be routed and carved like wood but does not contain grain, rot, or absorb moisture the way natural lumber can.

Dimensional lettering mounted to the routed dark background creates strong contrast and plenty of depth. The material is especially useful for exterior signs where the appearance of a carved dimensional sign is desired without many of the maintenance concerns associated with wood.

Lyons Mountain River Access rusted steel sign mounted on wood posts in Brevard North Carolina

Pickled Steel Community Sign

Lyons Mountain River Access

This custom steel sign identifies the Lyons Mountain River Access area in Brevard. The simple cut-out lettering keeps the message clear and readable, while the weathered steel surface gives the sign a rugged, natural appearance that fits beautifully into the surrounding landscape.

Asheville Signworks deliberately “pickled” the steel with a solution of hydrogen peroxide, white vinegar, and salt to accelerate oxidation and create the warm orange-brown patina. Mounted between heavy wood posts, the finished sign feels substantial and completely at home beside the river access.

Built in More Than One Way

Types of Metal & Wood Signs

Different materials and fabrication methods produce very different results. The right combination depends on the design, location, desired appearance, and how the finished sign will be used.

CNC Plasma-Cut Steel Signs

Custom lettering, logos, artwork, address signs, decorative panels, and one-of-a-kind designs cut directly from steel with a CNC plasma cutter.

Carved & Dimensional Wood Signs

Routed lettering, textured backgrounds, dimensional graphics, custom shapes, painted finishes, and traditional sign construction using wood.

HDU Signs

High-density urethane, commonly called sign foam, can be carved, routed, textured, and painted while resisting the rot, grain movement, and moisture issues associated with natural wood.

Patinated & Pickled Steel

Steel can be deliberately oxidized to create warm orange and brown patinas. Asheville Signworks has used a hydrogen peroxide, white vinegar, and salt solution to accelerate this naturally weathered appearance.

Gold Leaf & Specialty Finishes

Traditional gold leaf, painted finishes, dimensional layers, textured surfaces, and other specialty treatments can give a custom sign a completely distinctive appearance.

Custom Residential & Decorative Signs

House numbers, property names, farm signs, gifts, garden features, decorative metalwork, and unusual personal projects can be designed specifically for the people and place they represent.

Common Questions

Metal & Wood Sign FAQs

What is HDU sign foam?

HDU stands for high-density urethane. It is a rigid material developed for dimensional signs and is often called sign foam. It can be routed, carved, textured, and painted much like wood, but it does not rot and has no natural grain to split or absorb moisture.

Which is better for exterior use, HDU or real wood?

For routed or sandblasted signs, the two most common substrates are real wood and HDU, or high-density urethane. The cost is the same, but the materials behave differently.

We generally prefer wood, especially cedar. Cedar is relatively lightweight, naturally resistant to insects and weather, easy to work with, and the wood grain revealed through sandblasting adds a beautiful design element that HDU simply cannot duplicate. We have also used Douglas fir and oak for certain projects.

HDU is a lightweight foam product, which can make installation easier, but it is also more vulnerable to dents and physical damage and may develop surface pitting from environmental exposure. Wood tends to be stronger and more durable overall.

Whichever material is used, maintenance matters. Exterior wood and HDU signs should generally be repainted about every five years to protect them from sun, rain, moisture, and freezing weather. With proper care, a quality wood sign can easily last more than 20 years, and a well-protected HDU sign can provide a similarly long service life.

Can you make custom steel signs?

Yes. Asheville Signworks can create CNC plasma-cut steel signs using custom lettering, logos, illustrations, property names, addresses, decorative artwork, and other designs.

How do you make steel rusty?

When we want a warm, naturally rusted finish on raw steel, we “pickle” it ourselves. Our recipe is simple: mix 1 cup of white vinegar, 1 tablespoon of table salt, and about 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide.

If the steel is new, it is imperative that any oil or protective residue be removed before beginning the pickling process. We use acetone to thoroughly clean and degrease the surface. Freshly oiled steel can be surprisingly resistant to the acid treatment. It may appear to be rusting at first, but instead of bonding to the steel, the resulting oxidation can simply wipe away as a soft, rusty sludge. Starting with clean, oil-free bare steel allows the oxidation to develop directly on the surface and produce a durable, natural patina.

Put the mixture in a spray bottle and slosh it around until the salt has dissolved. Then spray the bare steel thoroughly. Reapply the solution every hour or two for two or three days, depending on how much color and texture you want to develop.

There is no need to keep the steel wet continuously. It can dry completely between applications, and direct sunlight isn't necessary either. Each treatment encourages additional oxidation, gradually building the lovely orange and brown swirling patina that makes naturally rusted steel so distinctive.

Because every piece of steel reacts a little differently, the finished patina is never perfectly uniform—which is part of what makes it so beautiful. There is no need to rinse the steel when you're finished. One word of caution: the steel will continue to rust over time, so if you're mounting it against a white plaster wall or another light-colored surface, use spacers to hold it slightly away from the wall and help prevent rust streaks.

Can you turn a photograph into a metal sign?

Sometimes, yes. A photograph can be simplified and converted into connected shapes suitable for CNC cutting. The design has to account for the fact that every portion of a one-piece steel sign must remain physically connected after the cut is complete.

Do you make residential signs?

Yes. Custom house numbers, property names, farm signs, decorative pieces, gifts, memorial signs, garden features, and other residential projects can all be produced in metal, wood, HDU, or combinations of materials.

Can you help design something completely custom?

Absolutely. Many of our favorite projects start with little more than a photograph, sketch, phrase, logo, or unusual idea. We can help develop the artwork into a design that can actually be fabricated.
